Arab interior ministers' visits mark Syria's reintegration into security networks

The US has formally notified Congress of its intention to remove Syria from the state sponsors of terrorism list, citing what it described as meaningful reforms and counterterrorism steps by President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s government. Under US law Congress has 45 days to review the move; if approved, it would lift a range of restrictions on banking, foreign assistance, investment, technology transfers and reconstruction and allow Syria to reconnect with the international financial system.

A string of visits by interior ministers from Türkiye, Jordan, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia to Damascus in July has accelerated security cooperation, with talks covering counterterrorism, organized crime, drug and weapons smuggling, border control, police training, disaster management and the return of refugees. Neighbouring states tied cooperation to their own national security and discussed restoring transport links and energy routes — including roads, railways between Türkiye, Syria, Jordan and the Gulf and rehabilitating the Kirkuk–Baniyas pipeline — as a pathway to broader economic integration and reconstruction.
