Bus Crash on Major Syria Highway Kills at Least 35

At least 35 people were killed and about 30 injured when two buses collided on Saturday on the Deir Az Zor–Damascus highway between al-Sukhnah and Palmyra. The Interior Ministry said one bus was carrying members of the Internal Security Forces and the other was transporting civilians; ambulances and several helicopters were sent to evacuate the wounded to Homs Military Hospital.

The collision highlights the dangers along the more than 400km route linking eastern Syria to the capital amid heavily degraded civilian infrastructure after nearly 14 years of war. Syria's Disaster Management minister reported over 2,000 road accidents between January and September, saying traffic crashes are among the country's leading causes of death, as reported by Al Jazeera
