Spanish envoy visits Bosra al-Sham
Antonio González‑Zavala, Spain’s special envoy to Syria, toured the ancient city of Bosra al‑Sham on Saturday, visiting major archaeological sites including the citadel and the Roman-era theatre. Accompanied by his family, Zavala said the trip aimed to examine Bosra’s distinctive architectural and historical heritage and praised the preservation of the ruins. Jihad al‑Qwaider, Daraa’s tourism director who joined the delegation, called the visit an important sign of international interest and dubbed Bosra “the jewel of southern Syria.” Zavala also met with Daraa Governor Anwar Taha al‑Zoubi at the governorate headquarters to discuss local conditions and potential investment opportunities.
Local officials said the visit could open the door to Spanish involvement in protection and restoration projects, noting Spain’s experience conserving sites damaged during the conflict. The envoy’s visit comes a day after a Brazilian tourism and investment delegation toured Bosra’s landmarks, highlighting renewed foreign attention to Syria’s archaeological heritage, as reported by SANA
