Syria and Egypt agree to deepen agricultural cooperation to boost production

Syrian Agriculture Minister Basil al-Suwaidan met with Egyptian Chargé d’Affaires Mohamed El-Feki to discuss strengthening agricultural cooperation and expanding partnership opportunities between the two countries. Al-Suwaidan emphasized Syria’s substantial agricultural potential and the ongoing efforts to clear dirt barricades and mines so affected lands can return to production. He identified modernizing pesticides, fertilizers and irrigation systems as key challenges and said the ministry is updating investment laws to better protect investors and attract capital into agriculture.

The minister outlined priorities including developing agricultural laboratories, linking farmers with investors for modern irrigation financing, expanding advanced irrigation techniques, and promoting contract farming to safeguard produce and support sustainable output. He also noted Syria could benefit from Egypt’s experience in tackling the invasive water hyacinth in the Orontes River. El-Feki reaffirmed the deep ties between the two countries and Egypt’s readiness to exchange expertise and enhance cooperation, as reported by SANA
