Key developments
Syria and Jordan held the second session of their Higher Coordination Council in Amman, co-chaired by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani and Jordanian FM Ayman Safadi, with some 30 ministers participating and the council received by Crown Prince Hussein. Both sides pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation and translate leadership directives into a comprehensive strategic partnership. Agreed measures include a joint “Diplomatic Engagement Week” between foreign ministries, closer coordination of diplomatic missions, and a formal mechanism to engage international and regional donors to support institutional development, capacity-building and priority projects in Syria, alongside expanded human resource and sectoral training programs.
The two countries also committed to restoring and facilitating transport links across air, land, sea and rail, and reviewed energy cooperation—welcoming the Jan. 26 gas supply agreement and agreeing to resume deliveries within two days of the session. Progress on rehabilitating an electricity interconnection inside Syria and possible electricity supplies from Jordan were discussed. Participants affirmed support for Syria’s reconstruction, the need to implement the roadmap to stabilize southern Syria (notably Sweida), warned against Israeli unilateral actions in the occupied West Bank, and pledged continued joint Arab action; the next council session will be held in Damascus at a later date, as reported by SANA
