Field operation begins in al-Houla

The National Commission for Transitional Justice, led by Abdul Basit Abdul Latif, has launched field operations in al-Houla, rural Homs, to collect testimonies from survivors, witnesses and victims’ families about massacres attributed to the deposed regime. Ahmad Sifou of the commission’s Truth-Seeking Department said the visit seeks to uphold Syrians’ right to uncover facts and pursue accountability; a dedicated team will soon expand investigations. The commission is coordinating fully with judicial authorities and is using prior documentation alongside direct statements to examine the root causes of the violations.

Local survivors welcomed the delegation as a practical step toward activating accountability mechanisms intended to bolster regional stability and deter vigilantism. The al-Houla massacre of May 2012, which killed dozens of civilians including many women and children, is a primary focus. The commission was established by presidential decree on May 17, 2025, as part of a broader transitional justice framework set out from December 8, 2024, to institutionalize truth-seeking, reparations and prevention of future violations, as reported by SANA
