UN delegation inspects damage in Quneitra
A delegation from the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, including commissioners Monia Ammar and Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, visited Quneitra province to document alleged Israeli violations of international law. The team conducted field visits to Al-Hamidiyah, Umm al-Azam and Jabata al-Khashab to assess destruction to homes and damage to livelihoods—particularly agriculture and livestock—and met with Quneitra Governor Ghassan Ahmad al-Sheikh, who briefed them on the social, psychological and economic impacts on local communities. The delegation said it is gathering material for reporting under UN mechanisms.
Local authorities say incidents have intensified since December 2024, citing repeated incursions, arrests and attacks on civilians, the demolition of 16 homes in Al-Hamidiyah following forced displacement, the arbitrary detention of 47 civilians, and the establishment of nine forward Israeli military positions inside Syrian territory in Quneitra and neighboring Daraa. Damascus has accused Israel of breaching the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and urged the international community to act; the Commission, established by the UN Human Rights Council in August 2011, will include its findings in public reports. as reported by SANA
