US envoy hails Silicon Valley tech talks as Visa signs MoU with Syria

U.S.-Syria tech dialogue gains momentum

U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack said he welcomed expanding technical discussions between Syrian and American teams held in Silicon Valley, calling the engagement a promising step toward modernizing Syria’s digital economy and deepening economic links. In a post on X, Barrack pointed to a newly announced memorandum of understanding between Visa and Syria’s Ministry of Communications as a tangible example of progress stemming from the talks.

Barrack stressed that cooperation among entrepreneurs, technologists, policymakers and international stakeholders can open pathways for sustainable growth, digital inclusion and shared prosperity. He also thanked the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for facilitating the exchanges; Syria’s Communications Minister Abdulsalam Haykal is in Washington at the chamber president’s invitation, Barrack noted, as reported by SANA
